I find achievements work a lot better in smaller games. They are designed to add replayability to the game and provide the user with set goals. Unfortunately achievement systems are still young to the MMO genre and are thus pretty average (if not useless). I still hold hope for achievement systems, I just haven't seen one implemented very well in an MMO (except maybe Guild Wars).

Despite my enjoyment of the system, there are some things that come across as a serious "WTF??" moment.

Changing your hairstyle isn't terribly monumentous. Buying seven bank tabs isn't either. Awarding achievements for these seems dumb.

What I'd really like to see, though, are guild achievements. Instead of points, though, guild achievements grant a stat boost to your guild tabard (only when worn). It would encourage people to wear them, could scale with level, that sort of thing.

You'd probably have to make them unwearable in arenas, though... that could get a little ridiculous.
