We need words for this: 15 MMO concepts that need labels

Language is a wonderful and everchanging thing. In a week that sees ‘noob’ added to the dictionary, I feel that MMOs still have more to contribute to the evolution of the English language.

Here’s a few suggestions for objects, feelings, or situations where current vocabulary doesn’t quite cut it. We need new words for these:

  1. Travelling halfway around the world to a group or instance before suddenly realising that you left some critical item in your bank.
  2. The feeling you get when you respec from tanking/healing to dps,  and you hit things and they fall over and you can’t stop giggling.
  3. The guy who always goes afk just before a boss pull. (note: noob may cover this one.)
  4. The sensation of wondering whether something you just discovered was meant to be there or is just a bug.
  5. In-game fishing zen.
  6. When one more person signs up than the group size will allow. It doesn’t matter what game you are playing or what the actual groupsize is.
  7. The screenshot that you take after a first kill.
  8. Realising that someone just signed up for your raid who you said you’d never group with again — but you need them to make up the numbers.
  9. The types of strange conversation that go on in your game’s main chat channel (if it has one). eg. Trade chat, Barrens chat (for the dinos)
  10. Someone who has been playing a game since the first day it went live.
  11. Very militaristic guilds, especially when the officers have delusions of grandeur.
  12. The kind of RP server which isn’t really very different from a regular server except that some of the names are better.
  13. The sinking feeling when a friend rerolls the same class/role as you and you know you’ll be fighting for group spots with them later.
  14. People who only log on to do dailies.
  15. Extended discussions in guild about what type of DKP system to use.

Feel free to suggest more!

  1. 1) Dohwned.
    D’oh, distance, ownage.

    10) Ceer
If they havent gotten the collectors edition, they’ve certainly been around enough to get trinkets and toys you never will.

  2. I’ll give this a shot, in the style of Rich Hall’s Sniglets:

Tragret – Travelling halfway around the world to a group or instance before suddenly realising that you left some critical item in your bank.

Giddywomp – The feeling you get when you respec from tanking/healing to dps, and you hit things and they fall over and you can’t stop giggling.

Jackafk – The guy who always goes afk just before a boss pull. (note: noob may cover this one.)

Glitchjoy – The sensation of wondering whether something you just discovered was meant to be there or is just a bug.

    Repitiglee – In-game fishing zen.

Tooman – When one more person signs up than the group size will allow. It doesn’t matter what game you are playing or what the actual groupsize is.

Printscream – The screenshot that you take after a first kill.

Desperaid – Realising that someone just signed up for your raid who you said you’d never group with again — but you need them to make up the numbers.

Generichat – The types of strange conversation that go on in your game’s main chat channel (if it has one). eg. Trade chat, Barrens chat (for the dinos)

Origivet – Someone who has been playing a game since the first day it went live.

Miliguild – Very militaristic guilds, especially when the officers have delusions of grandeur.

Qualiplay – The kind of RP server which isn’t really very different from a regular server except that some of the names are better.

Duplibummed – The sinking feeling when a friend rerolls the same class/role as you and you know you’ll be fighting for group spots with them later.

Dailogs – People who only log on to do dailies.

Nerdscussions – Extended discussions in guild about what type of DKP system to use.

  3. I’ll add another to the list:

DKPeen: The feeling you get when you realize you’re on top of your guilds DKP list, even if it’s just because someone else just spent their points.

  4. In Guild Wars, I call people who do the Zaishen Quests daily “Slaves of the Zaishen”.

    11. is “Nazi Raiders” for sure. 😉

  5. I am going to guess that Ethic was a fan of “sniglets,” of at least knows what I am driving at.

    Hrmm, for fishing? Angle-ah? Rod-vana? Pole-axed? Net-positive? Virtually hooked? Bobber blessed? Lure-gasm?

In the past I would have called the people who log in just for the daily quests “easily amused,” but then I started doing the Dalaran cooking and fishing dailies… well… every day.

  6. As awesome as “nerdscussions” is, I think I’d rather my gaming words be their own terms, along the lines of noob and woot and pwned, instead of just being amusing compound words.

Can we come up with some easy-to-pronounce catchy acronyms that we can eventually forget the meanings for?

  7. Words like “Glitchjoy” and “Printscream” are the kind I might actually use. They sneacked into my vocabulary as I read Ethic’s comment.

  8. There are some other words needed I think. I’ve taken a stab at a few but I’d certainly like to hear other options.

Cryrealization – The feeling you get when leading a raid and you come to the realization it’s going to be a wipe and there’s absolutely NOTHING you can do about it.

Trying to compute in your head the amount of DPS, the health left on the boss, the time to the enrage timer and whether or not you should shut up in vent or cheer folks on because there is still a slim chance.

Tankoptional – The first kill of any new boss where you lose at least one of the main tanks.

flawcoughless – A first kill of a boss with less than 10 of the 25 raid members alive.

logcheck/whatdahellwasdat – The first pull on a new encounter that lasts less than 10 seconds.

The guy who’s always the first to die on any encounter where you really can’t have anyone die.
