Not read that one, although I do like Diane Duane. To be honest I'm not sure that cat wizards are really my cup of tea.

Books that influenced me here were:
The Cats of Seroster (read this as a teen, it's very awesome indeed and does feature some mystical medieval cats)
The London Pigeon Wars (yes it is about exactly what it says)

Spinks, have you read Diane Duane's "The Book of Night With Moon" or "To Visit the Queen"? They're set under the premise that cats are actually quite intelligent and some are even wizards who guard various dimensional gates into our world. She develops cat language and society in ways very similar to what you're talking about.

It could be that "gear" is represented by upgrades to your abilities like City of Heroes. eg: Defend your territory against an interloper and gain a "+1 Local Knowledge" charm, which adds to your abilities when in friendly territory, but is not compatible with a "+1 Feral Hunter" charm which increases abilities when hunting...

Also for a contemporary, animal-based paradigm, check out the Duncton Chronicles by William Horwood. Sure its about moles, but it gets very dark and violent.

But what about gear? Beyond necklaces (which I doubt any wild cat would permit themselves to wear) there just isn't that much to wear. Unless we make it a bit more fantasy and let them wear cat-armor.

As Tesh said above, why stop at just cats? THrow in rats, dogs, hamsters and flushed turtles and you got yourself a real RvR territorial game ;)
