You might benefit from checking out Axiom's loot list style of distribution. It requires a good bit of work from everyone once a month, but loot goes snappy fast (you can even have the designated ML do the looting while everyone else clears more trash).

The explanation is here:

What helped me a lot with the loot was realising that as a raid leader, I really didn't want to waste too many brain cycles fretting over what happened to it. I just wanted to get it sorted quickly in a fair way so that we could move on.

In particular, I did not want to have to deal with the 'you go first', 'no YOU go first' that Kadomi is talking about. We're a friendly raid group too and people don't want to seem greedy but /I/ don't want to waste valuable raid time over it :)

So I'm quite draconian. I don't give people a lot of time to roll if they want something, and after the rolls I ask the winner if they want it (that gives them a few seconds to decide if they prefer to pass it to someone else or not) and if they say yes then *bang* I use my master looter to give it out. Done.

I don't care really if it goes to someone for off-spec. If we've killed a boss once we'll kill it again.

And although it may not result in an absolutely optimal loot distribution, I think the time we save for more attempts more than makes up for it. So yeah, my advice Kadomi is don't be afraid to make them decide more quickly. It's not the end of the world.

And good luck with Naxx! I think it was a pretty big milestone for us when we first cleared all four wings in 3 hours. It is a good achievement!

Loot is a massive time sink. We've recently changed from rolling to loot council and it makes things a lot slower. I can see that rolls are frustrating for some people but I rather miss the speed.

The plus side is that people seem much nicer under the loot council system. It gets people to see what the other guys have and think about whether to pass and we're getting a lot of people generously passing (which rarely happens under a /roll system).

My guild only raids 10-mans, and we've been struggling with speed. Our best time has been four Naxx wings in 3.5 hours, but usually it's more like 3 wings in 3 hours. In an all-girls guild one of the issues is that everyone is too nice, and so loot discussions take forever. We have simple loot rules based on need/greed, and yet, loot takes forever. "You take it! Nah, you take it. Nah, you take it more!"

In a push to speed up raiding, this week we are trying to clear four wings in closer to 3 hours, and I will make people continue clearing trash while I am master-looting. Wish me luck. :)
