I just got into the Aion beta and I’m not impressed at all. The graphics are fine but unimpressive. The gameplay is exactly the same as nearly every other MMO that has come out for over the past decade.

Flying is fine and all but amounts to nothing more than a gimic.

I haven’t seen any of the PvP and at this point I doubt I ever will. As MMO’s go this feels shallow and uninteresting.

Color me disappointed.

It’s not just WoW. I’ve never liked ANY competitive games. It’s much worse in an online game environment where 90% of the time, people use their anonymity as an excuse to be complete jerks. I don’t care how well-designed it is, if a game doesn’t give me an option to not participate in PvP, I’m not going to be playing that game for long.

Kiryn, I’m going to say that if the only PvP you’ve seen in an MMO was in WoW, there is a chance this may be better/ different. I can’t speak from experience with Aion (that’s my goal next beta weekend, check out PvP) but I know I’ve enjoyed PvP far more in Warhammer Online than I ever did in WoW — some games just do things differently and that may mean that its more fun.

I’m really looking forward to checking this game out (it looks AMAZING), but the focus on PvP really worries me. I’m a pure PvE player, and the fact that even their PvE involves fighting against stupid other players just to fight a raid boss sounds annoying.

It’s good to hear that the game does have an auction house (that’s deal-breaker #1) but lack of a pure PvE server is definitely deal-breaker #2.

Luckily, the release date comes comfortably after both 3.2 and Champions Online, so I probably won’t have the time to play it anyway =)

Thanks for giving a nice overview of the game. I’ve been getting lost in the minutae other bloggers have been posting. I’m really trying to avoid yet another MMO, but I may be giving this a try.

Jonathan: I’m afraid I don’t really know much about the PvE endgame, the beta tests so far have been for low levels only.

But if you look at the website, one of their big selling points is PvPvE which means big monsters to fight in the Abyss with constant possibilities of being attacked by the other side also. I wouldn’t be surprised if that meant some kind of raids.

So all I can really say right now is that the PvE I have seen was great — nothing excitingly different but well executed and fun. We know the game has been out for awhile in Korea so there’s definitely more to it.

Thanks for the write up – really looking forward to this game. I’m a long-time WoW player and am looking for something new and exciting. I do have one question that I hope you can help me with: I am a PvE player for the most part, I love grouping up for heroics and especially raids and PvE progression. Will there be a substantial and extensive PvE component in Aion to look forward to?
