I found EQ2 very engrossing and somehow soothing. One of the best elements is the music. I happened to hear the EQ2 music while listening to a podcast and I realised it's one of the things I miss the most about the game.

@joel -- the first 20 levels are a bitch, because the "arts" you have (those buttons you hit) aren't very good. At 20, they get upgraded and life becomes a lot easier. At 40 they get upgraded again (and at 60 and 80) and it keeps getting better.

Oddly, EQ2 crafting is at its hardest in the first 10-20 levels, which puts so many people off it's not funny. But seriously, it only gets easier.

I pretty much play with chrome open in the background so I can check stuff out on the EQ2 wiki -- I could use the in-game browser but it's a clunky bastage. Either way, sometimes quests are just-right mysterious and it's fun and rewarding to try to figure out what to do... and sometimes you can just tell the bloody GM (quest writer) is really bloody pleased with how bloody mysterious they made the bloody goal, and they withhold that tiny bit of info that will end up frustrating you for two hours until you randomly run into what you needed -- and that just irritates me, so I do a virtual raspberry and look the damn thing up.

As for crafting, all specs make useful things though as with animals, some are more useful than others. I was trying to rank them just now, but they're *all* useful unless you're both playing cloth/leather wearers in which case an armoursmith would be least useful to your duo. Other than that, it's usually a case of picking something you think will be fun. Carpenter is usually a good first choice because you get to make all manner of furniture, some of which sells fairly well, and you get to make boxes, which is insanely useful (especially for the altholic types like me). I went provisioner with my first char and had a blast, but I also know lots of people who hate it -- it's also a little more difficult atm because the stupid crafting events (or rather, countering them correctly) never give you any power back, but that's easiy complemented with drink + totems.

Am rambling. Remember, if you loathe a prof you can actually give it up and start another, and all you'd be losing are a few crafting levels -- which aren't the end of the world. If you're short on levelling resources, let me know... I'm the original Harvesting Ho, yo!

I've been trying EQ2 lately and the crafting system is driving me nuts. I have a sequence of buttons I press that seem to give me a decent chance of success but it feels very random to me. When I fail, I don't know if it was doomed from the start or if I didn't hit the right buttons in time. If you have any tips, or links to good tips, I would really appreciate it.

Great to hear you've subbed to EQ2 and are enjoying it so far. It's a good game. Depending on the server you're on, you may or may not see a lot of lower level people kicking around but they have the open chat channels which are fantastic (I'd love to see something similar in WoW). EQ2 also has mentoring so don't be afraid to ask people for help. A lot of folk actually like mentoring lower level players and completing quests and dungeons for achievement points they may have missed the first time round.
