Boosting is the local term for when a high level character runs lower level characters through an instance so that they can get some free xp, quest rewards, and possibly other stuff like drops also. Certainly in WoW and presumably in other games too, if you stand around in a city you will hear people [...]

Why I don’t play Runes of Magic
Posted in general mmo, tagged different armour, runes of magic, semi naked women, thong on July 12, 2009 | 39 Comments »
I’m not playing any more games where the front page of their site shows men in full armour/ robes and women in thongs/ briefs. So web designers, if you want to say “This game is not for Spinks’” then that’s how to do it.

Players often ask for the ability to make more meaningful choices in MMOs. People mean different things by ‘meaningful choice’, it could be: Options available to the player in the future depend on choices they made in the past The game world itself changes based on choices the player has made If you make the [...]

In order to sport the Crusader title in WoW, you need a few exalted factions and a lot of jousting under your belt. As well as becoming a champion (via the Argent Tournament) of every Horde or Alliance city faction, you must also be exalted with all of those factions and with the Argent Crusade. [...]

Ysharros posts a really interesting link to some insider commentary on shifts in focus at WoW at the moment. Eric@The Elder Game discusses how development teams are organised on MMOs, and how staff switch focus from developing new games to running the live (maintenance) teams or vice versa; he also uses his experience to explain [...]
Is crafting meant to be fun?

Some of the best fun I have had with crafting in games has been where it was unusual to be a crafter so people would come seek you out to make commissions. I think this is quite close to the original concept for crafting in MMOs. It was based on the medieval idea of the [...]
Designing the Perfect Character

When I was running pen and paper RPGs, I noticed that some players always want to create the same type of character. It won’t matter what genre they are playing, or what ruleset. In their imaginary worlds, they have some kind of perfect platonic character, and that’s the one they want to play. At first, [...]
Learning from Watching Others

I feel inspired to start today with a failure story. My first MMO was Dark Age of Camelot and my first character was a minstrel. It’s a jack of all trades class with a bit of melee, a bit of buffing, some stealth, and some crowd control. The crowd control was a single target mez [...]
