On the subject of whether the IP is the only draw for this game, I find it hard to say. Certainly, the IP is the only reason I even thought to try the game, as I don't generally like Sci-fi as a genre, and I don't like shooters. I can't think of anything that would keep me interested in flying a ship through space, any mechanic that would make me enjoy it other than that I can go "Battlestations!" and fire all torpedoes.

In contrast, though I highly respect the Fallen Earth MMO and its developers, I couldn't get into that game because I don't care for the post-apocalyptic setting and the shooter combat. So I find it difficult to separate the mechanics of the game (good vs. bad; enough to sustain interest outside of the IP, etc.) from the setting.

I'd probably buy this if it were sold like GW, where I could pay for content. It sounds like the instanced/mission-based design is similar enough to GW or even DDO that it really shouldn't be using the sub model.

I felt the same way in beta.

Question is, "If it didn't have STAR TREK theme and were instead a generic Sci-Fi setting, would you still play it in its current form?"

For me, its a "No". It feels too much like a ST theme park with very little open world. All I remember in my couple of hours of beta was the word "LOADING..." - (sigh). I really wanted to like it but I wont be playing this one.

Hopefully the future will be brighter for this game.

Selling your bridge officers did strike me as a little odd as well. ;)

The map definitely sucks. At one point I spent 2 hours flying around a system looking for mining stations.... They have scanners for goodness sake. They added the ability to get a waypoint for anomalies at the end of beta, but that does nothing for finding set points in space that you should be able to just set a course and go....

Space combat is fun. I also enjoyed the ground combat, but wished the missions weren't all kill-kill-kill. There was one "diplomacy" mission I found, but it consisted of running around gathering opinions and then answering "Yes" or "No" questions about what people said -- not very complex diplomacy.

That said, I'm in.

You / Mitch Wagner are quite right about my feeling regarding the latest Star Trek movie. I hope the series does not continue too much in the action oriented and "this is war - enemies must die!" simple mentality of Abrams. We already have a tendency to accept blunt violence, being more open to torture and military actions in our society that is alarming. This manifests itself in our movies and games.

But in the case of STO, I can also blame it a bit on lack of creativity of the writers, unfortunately. :P Thought they have some really great missions replaying favorite episodes especially of the TOS series like the Guardian of Forever and the Doomsday Machine.

Anyways, I am looking forward to hear from Captain Spinks tonight. :)
