Speaking as a giver and a recipient of Arbs various swaps, it is fun and I still mean to post a screenshot of the beautifically boxed chocolate I got at Easter.

It is straightforward and totally non-mandatory - just for those who enjoy sending and receiving deliciousness in the post! Also, for those that are inclined that way, it is yet another way of seeing the people behind those little pixels running around on our computer screens.

Funny enough this activity is called "wichteln" where I live, which would translate into something like "imp-ing" or "gnome-ing", haha!! I always ended up utterly disappointed over this back in school (I just make the best prezzies myself, what can I say), but I think it's big fun ingame, sending each other something small from some unknown alt! a nice way to spice up the long wait until xmas (or cataclysm?)! =)

I simply HATE mandatory trade-gifts-circles around Christmas for instance at work, in organizations etc. It feels constructed and just like a burden and I always end up giving some crap I wouldn't like myself and for sure know that no one else likes either, just because I "have to" and suck at coming up with a good idea (and I'm not goblinish enough to just ignore the social nonsense). So first I cringed at this idea to be honest. But since you restrict it to candy and keep down the cost I think it sounds OK or even as a little bit of fun. Considering the mailing costs these days I can't imagine that you can buy very much of candies if you're sending it cross-Europe though. Most of the stated sum would go to stamps...

It's been terrifically successful, Arb is too modest :) I love how people post screenshots of unpacking their newly arrived goodies. And one of the key things is that the amount of money you spend on the sweets etc is restricted so everyone knows what is expected before they sign up.

What do you do if someone doesn't get a parcel, do you have reserves on standby?
