[Cataclysm] Patch 4.1, everything old is new again, and looking for guild

So the first gingerbread trails of news leading to the next big WoW patch have started up. I had a few bullet point reactions.

  • I’ve heard people comment that the timing was directed at countering Rift. This may be true but it’s also happens to be the time of the year for product launches and announcements anyway – DA2, Bulletstorm, Pokemon Black and White, etc (hint: those launches were not all aimed at hampering Rift). If people could just get their heads out of the AAA MMO sandpit for a moment they’d see this sort of stuff is par for the course.
  • There are two ways to react to a redo of an old instance. 1) oh no, they’re reusing old bosses/ graphics. 2) Wow, awesome, they’re updating an old storyline.
  • Blizzard having reused Nefarian in this tier of raiding (when any of Deathwing’s children could have fitted the bill) is a far far worse breach of “oh god, why do we have to fight the same boss again when its story is already over and done with” than the troll instances which, to be fair, were always populated with demi gods anyway.
  • Or in other words, I think a retooled ZA and ZG sound as though they could be good fun. They won’t be the same as the originals but they were both fun, lively instances with memorable fights so if Blizzard can keep that aspect they’ll be onto a winner here.
  • A new tier of ilvl 353 epics. Really? (Just for comparison – heroics drop ilvl 346 blues, raids and exalted reps give ilvl 359 epics. At this point they’re just splitting hairs; just decide that Cataclysm epics start at ilvl 359 and don’t confuse people with a few extra points here and there!)
  • Guild quests sound interesting. It will be particularly interesting to see what types of guilds the quests are aimed at.
  • New looking for guild interface is another interesting addition, that in my opinion the game has needed for ages. What they have at the moment is fairly basic though. You get to select your choice of guild as Casual/ Moderate/ Hardcore and to set whether you are free during weekdays or weekends. Then you can note whether you play tank/healer/ dps and leave a note for any interested guilds at the bottom. I’m puzzled as to what sort of guild finding this is possibly fit for. The mind boggles. But still, it’s a start and if all you want to do is tank at weekends, it probably could help find something.
  • Firelands raid and dailies. If the dailies are like Quel’Danas (TBC dailies) this could be a lot of fun for people as they get the sense of helping to slowly change the zone. On the other hand, you just super changed the zone by zooming through its quests at level 80, so spending a couple of months doing dailies to change another part is going to feel slow in comparison. We know now that the raid will be coming later than the new 5 man instances. I don’t know how well that will work for the raiding crowd or how bored they are with the current tier but together with a caverns of time raid there’s certainly plenty to look forwards to.

I think the next couple of WoW patches sound as though they will be good fun. There are new 5 mans, a progressive daily quest hub, loads of new lore and caverns of time related stuff, and the chance to kill Ragnaros (again :P), preferably before he evolves beyond legs.

I’m on the fence myself when it comes to reusing old bosses. Certainly with the old troll demi gods and elemental lords it can be very powerful storywise to bring them back in an appropriate manner. Ragnaros in particular sounds like a great use of an old boss.

  1. Me experiences in the trenches tells me what the LF Guild tool done be missing some key data points. Fer examples, “does ya require a guild tabard? bank tabs? armadillo?” And of course, the all-importants “I am looking fer a good guild (y/n)”.

Me guild is making progress about as I expecteds, which means we’s downing bosses but has a long ways fer ta go. So when Firelands arrives I ain’t anticipatings that we’ll be bored yet, but we may be reasies fer ta move on anyhow. Course, is fair ta say what any guild what calls itself Black Leather Undies ’cause the real name be too weird is not a good indicator of nuthin’.

    • The big thing with the guild seeker for me is that there isn’t a question on whether you’re interested in PvP. It’s just very bizarre.

And you’re not allowed to get bored with this tier of raiding until you’ve finished all your greens!

  2. What I really find interesting about all this is that blizzard is delaying Firelands because people haven’t been advancing through the current tier of raiding as quickly as they thought they would.

Which says something about the people who were asking for harder raids.

    • Yes, this is an interesting one because first they said they were delaying Firelands because people weren’t advancing quickly enough, and then they backtracked and said they were delaying release because it wasn’t ready yet.

This raises a few issues for me, such as:
      – what’s the point of progressing faster than the ‘blizzard norm’ unless you have a special interest in butting your head against hard modes?
      – are people not advancing quickly enough because raids are harder, or is it because non-hardcore players in general are just showing less interest in this tier of raiding

      • I think the diffculty of this tier has kicked the legs out from under the middlecore a bit, to the point where they lost impetus.

Without a steady progression, I think a lot of people decided ‘Screw it. I’m gonna go play rated bgs’ which are both fun and relatively loot rich. More loot rich than spending the night wiping on elemental council, anyway.

In a lot of ways, the situation reminds me of early Burning Crusade.

      • I found myself uninterested in the raids because they were harder. And this led me to realize there wasn’t anything in the game I was enjoying doing, so I no longer have an active subscription.

There’s nothing in 4.1 that would even slightly make me change my mind on this. The ilvl 353 gear appears to me to be a somewhat desperate attempt to get people moving into PvE progression again. I doubt it will do much good.

If they are delaying Firelands because it isn’t ready, I wonder why it isn’t ready. My suspicion? They’ve already torn up the plans they’ve had for raid encounters in this expansion and are redesigning them from scratch. Possibly, they’re redoing the raid to have three difficulty levels.

  3. Good morning Spinks,

You bring up a lot of really good points with this post and you raise some excellent questions.

In my opinion, hard modes are progression. You had asked whether more non-hardcore players were showing less interest in raiding and I feel it’s exactly the opposite. I see more people running around with the same gear that I have access to and it’s very strange for me to see.

I will say that 25 mans have become the minority and most of the people that are wearing said gear are getting it through 10 mans and they’re achieving success that way. With that said, more people seem to be raiding and because of this hard modes have become the thing that separates the men from the boys, sorta speak.

Blizzard has made it very clear that they want their players to see their content, regardless of how you do it. While there are more people raiding, that doesn’t mean they’re raiding well and many are still struggling with the opening bosses of content. I can understand why Blizzard feels that people have more to see and they want to delay Firelands to give people that chance.

My guild just hit 11/12 in 25 man regular modes and we’re just about to launch into hard modes. That’s where I get hungry for more and focused and I want the time to enjoy those things. I don’t feel pushing Firelands back is such a bad idea.
    :)
