I know exactly what you mean. I enjoy Rift and am still having fun with it, but it's not THE game, and this does kind of highlight for me the issues I'd probably have with any MMO ... even if THE ideal one existed. Which is food for thought.

I think playing a really good single player game (DA2 in my case) also shifts your thinking about, or at least highlights where single player games are more chilled than MMOs.

I think a change of scene and some variety is always a good way to help you appreciate things more. I mean, how can one judge a product if one has nothing else to compare it with? Strangely enough though, I think trying more MMOs would make most people appreciate WoW more :)

You make some excellent points and suggestions here! I used to think, prior to Rift, that I wouldn't mind playing a prettier WoW. I dismissed LOTRO as an anomaly and was won over by the Rift beta. I used to think that I had a hard time logging into these games because I was so very short on time.

Now that I've spent many an evening logging more hours in GW1 since Rift's release than in Rift, I realize that I genuinely don't really enjoy traditional MMOs and the gameplay and rewards they offer.

I am waiting for someone else to make an(other, if you count GW1) MMO differently, more tailored to my needs. I won't make this error in judgment again.

Great post, and I concur wholeheartedly with all 5 points. I've always enjoyed playing different games concurrently and have burned myself out on WoW by trying to stick to it for too long. Now I'm playing a bit of LoTRO, a bit of RIFT and thoroughly enjoying gaming again!

I do get frustrated with WoW guildmates who are stuck in WoW, moan about the game a whole lot but when they try a new game they say "it's just like WoW, might as well go back to WoW then" without giving it a chance.

I much prefer Keen's 3-monther view that you quoted, which I consider pragmatic. I can play an MMO as a game for a few months and feel it was worth it.

True. I'm one of those people who's happy eating at the same restaurant a lot and having a few close friends. I tried PotBS, but mostly I just play WoW. And yet, it still struck me as funny that anybody would need reasons (or justifications!) to branch out when the familiar things aren't as satisfying as they should be.

Hee, lots of people like to stick with one MMO. And there's nothing wrong with it, but I think the hobby works better when you realise that no game will last you forever.

After all, a meal, book, or movie only lasts a few hours. And plenty of people are happy with a few close friends, or a single hobby.

Why would anybody only ever play one game or need reasons for trying out something new?

Consider these blog titles:
5 reasons why it’s good to eat at multiple restaurants
5 reasons why it’s good to read multiple books
5 reasons why it’s good to have multiple friends
5 reasons why it’s good to enjoy multiple hobbies
5 reasons why it’s good to see multiple movies

Even if you have a favorite restaurant, author, friend, hobby or show, they wear thin if that's your entire world. As they say, variety is the spice of life.
