Updated: so VG247 have dug into this and Blizzard just said that they hadn’t announced a release date yet for D3.
I am sure that I was not the only person who was just a wee bit gutted to read yesterday that Blizzard’s CEO had said that the only games they had due out in 2010 were Starcraft 2 and Warcraft: Cataclysm. What about Diablo 3, did we really have to wait until 2011?
Fear not, because (just for once) Blizzard are hinting at getting the game out earlier. VG247 reports that Mike Morhaime is saying that it’ll be out this year. (I wouldn’t normally put up a post for something like this but it’s Diablo and I’m a fangirl 😛 )
They do comment that they’ll be getting more information on this because they’re dubious, and much as I’d like to believe it, I’m dubious too. After all, SC2 was pushed back because of work on the upgraded battlenet and surely Diablo will be using that also.

SC2 was meant to be out this year and got pushed back which is a huge shame. D3 not coming out until 2011 is a travesty. I mean, it can’t take *that* long to make the game can it?

Yes, it can take that long. Building games is roughly as hard as designing and building airplanes. And it gets harder when you want to make a game that you want to last for a decade. Most company’s games last 18 months and then everyone’s moved on from them. Starcraft and Diablo II are still being played almost 10 years later.
I hope Boeing and Airbus take no offence at that, Zach. Sure, programming takes time. Game design takes time. Good game design probably even more.
Still… I rather wonder if they intend to wait long enough so that they can sell SC + Diablo in new clothes again to a new generation of gamers.
I am already feeling old, and wonder if I could still enjoy an RTS (have not played any for years) or mass killing frenzies like Diablo which I probably have not played for over 10 years already. I cannot even remember my last time playing any of the predecessors.
So far SC2 news hints at micro-transaction sale of maps and 3 “chapters” of the game, one for each race.
I wonder if I will not remember getting a game with 3 races and all maps for free some 10-15 years ago? 😉
Fall 2010 is when they are saying now, as far as a release date.
