[Cataclysm] Drops vs Quest Rewards

It’s always interesting at the start of an expansion to watch the queue sizes on popular servers like Argent Dawn (well over an hour at peak time last night)  – reminds me of how many people actually play this thing, when they’re all encouraged to log in at the same time. (And how much scope there is for improving the server architecture too ….)

So I haven’t had a lot of time in game. One thing I have noticed though is that random green drops in Vash’jir look to be better quality than similar green quest rewards. (For example, I picked up a level 79 dagger with +963 spellpower on it – that’s a similar item level (283) to the caster drops from heroic 25 man Lich King. Level 79.)

If this is intended and not just an item glitch, it’s quite a turn up for the books. In other expansions, green drops were mostly disenchanting fodder since there were bound to be better quest rewards just around the corner. Quests gave better rewards and it was partly an incentive to do them.

But it always felt strange to just sell item drops as if they were trash. I think I like the idea that it should be exciting when any type of item drops, even if it’s just for an alt or for resale. Disenchanting shouldn’t really be the automatic response.

  1. So far I’ve gotten around five quest rewards that I can’t even equip (no caster choices available) and one helm that increased my stats by about 21%. The new itemization is confusing, to say the least. Some of my old items had the spellpower ripped out altogether, while some still had them. Certain enchants have also gone missing.

    Oh well, at least the questing is challenging now.

  2. I’m all sorts of confused. I have completely new mechanics with my Balance spec to deal with and changes to my primary Resto spec like Tree form is on a cool down now??

    Perhaps the biggest shock was that the game did not think my gear was good enough for the new dungeons! Granted, I haven’t played in months and I didn’t have any of the newer raid gear, but I have quite a few pieces of badge gear! Oh well, suppose I’ll need to go quest a bit and take the time to upgrade via quest rewards.

  3. Some of the new “four stat” greens are indeed very powerful. I’ve also noticed some oddities between greens and blues – e.g. I had the blue wand Corla’s Baton drop in BRC, compared it to my WotLK epic and decided it was inferior. Then a later mob dropped a BoE green wand (Mirkfallon, level 80 req), and it was considerably better than the boss drop! 40 more dps and higher stats. Odd.

  4. Was just going to post what Noah did above: the first few days of TBC were all about long-time raiders replacing their purple gear with green quest rewards or drops. Blizzard also decided to ramp up stamina gain on the later quests, so almost every piece of gear had a HUGE bump in stamina for more survivability.

    Seems WotLK had less of a jump, so people have forgotten about TBC.
