Last year we had a spate of MMO companies being hit by DDoS or other hacking attacks. This week has been the turn of CCP, the EVE servers were down for a few hours last week and for at least 12 hours over the weekend.
Because it’s EVE, people don’t just automatically think “omg foreign hackers wanting to steal our account details”, there is also speculation around “OK, so which corps got pissed off enough to take down the login servers?” I imagine Stabs will be wondering if his alliance had anything to do with it.
The servers still aren’t up and the reason I know this is because I thought it would be a good use of my last free time before my new job (hurrah!) starts to actually do the EVE free trial. Well, it was all a good idea in theory anyhow. On a related note, I think they’ve made some substantial improvements to the introductory tutorials and new player stuff since I last looked at an EVE trial a couple of years ago. I hesitate to say “dumbing down” but the newbie mining frigate you get given seems surprisingly good for a freebie.
But since the servers have been down I had to actually get out of the house and/or hunt for more of the new raid pets in WoW instead. Will any of you EVE players be surprised if the DDoS attack does turn out to be some metagaming RL trolling tactic?
